A brew and you…

3 02 2009

Ok, so less is more, we have established that. Now lets prove it.

For instance, you buy a coffee (or other tasty beverage) every day on your train ride to work, and another on the way home.

This can be anything from  2.5 litres to nearly 6 litres of coffee per week. (based on small and large high street coffee sizes). Now imagine drinking that in one go!

This means 1KWH a fortnight of power used heating the water for your brews. If you are a carbon person that’ about 400g. (it’s slightly less if you brew with gas, about 380g).

A year, you are using 24.5KWH of energy or 9.8kilograms of carbon, just for brews.

So there you are, Looking like a Parisian art dealer sipping a cappamochodrinko every morning at Grimsby station.

So let’s lose some brews and see if it’s better for the planet…

If you save your poncing about like the proverbial continental cultural expert for just 50% of your journeys, i.e. 0ne brew a day. You then save:

  • Upto 147Litres of water a year. Over 1.3 full bathtubs of warm brown brew water.
  • 4.9kilograms, approximately the weight of a medium sized family pet, of carbon. This is the ammount of carbon produced by your average diesel car over a 40kilometre journey.
  • Enough energy to run a 3 bedroom family home for 6 hours.

And how much does this cost you? Nothing, in fact it puts between £490 and £735 quid back in your pocket.

Just do the maths if you want to see how this relates to your brew guzzling habits. Cutting back from 2 brews a day to 1 brew a will not only make you a planet wide hero, you will also become very very rich.

Seriously though, Imagine the if everyone ditches a brew a day.

Per year, for the UK population that equates to roughly.

  • Upto £37Billion Pounds in the nation’s pockets (if the brews are store bought)
  • Upto 7.4Billion Litres of water
  • 80% of the power saving needed to shut down a 500Megawatt coal power station.

So what is all this treats lark about?

For a start, this post has a misleading title really, as the object of these ideas is treat the world, by treating yourself to less.

Over this post series I will look at various ways to help the world by making small everyday changes.
